Cultural Experiences

The Haida people have lived on the Islands for thousands of years, the rich resources of the land have provided a source of food, ceremony and spiritual sustenance. The Haida culture is still very much alive today through the arts, language and its People. Haida Tourism is proud to offer numerous cultural activities, providing guests with a better understanding of the Haida culture. All cultural activities are authentic and led by a Haida interpreter, who will lead you all over the Island. From picture-perfect spots like Balance Rock or Jungle Beach, to the homes of local artisans who are happy to invite you in and showcase their work. Personal guided tours through the Haida Heritage Centre at Kay Llnagaay will explain carvings and pictures throughout the museum. You will also have the opportunity to visit ancient Haida village sites located in Gwaii Haanas National Park Reserve. K’uuna Llnagaay (also known as Skedans) and SGang Gwaay are two sites with ancient poles and fallen house pits to give you a sense of how the Haida lived centuries ago.

Outdoor Activities

If you’re an outdoor enthusiast, we have activities for you! Head up to North Beach. Hike the boardwalk up through lush green forests, at the top you will be awed by the stunning view of the pounding surf and find sandy beaches that stretch for over 100 miles. Back at Haida House you can take a relaxing walk with a local naturalist to the Pesuta Shipwreck, where you also can look at nearby tidal pools and enter the unique world of these undersea creatures. If marine adventures are more your style, then you have the option of enjoying a guided kayak tour of Masset Inlet to the mouth of the Yakoun River. The calm waters with our certified kayak guide will lead you through serene territory in fully equipped single or double kayaks.

WONDROUS WILDLIFE

Often referred to as the “Galápagos of the North”, Haida Gwaii is home to different species of flora and fauna, some of which have evolved over thousands of years. The Haida Gwaii black bear or Taan in the Haida language, is the largest subspecies of black bear in North America, who over the years has developed a larger jaw and teeth from feasting on the intertidal. Zodiac excursions provide the perfect opportunity to view the larger marine mammals in their natural habitat including humpbacks, orcas, sea lions and many more! You will be sure to see many deer on the islands due to the introduction years ago of the Sitka Black Tail deer, which has no predators on Island, therefore enjoying the rich source of forest food without fear!

The locals will welcome you, the nature will embrace you and the culture and tradition are sure to enrich your soul.
